Penguin Packs
Looking for a quick and easy way to get handouts to your students? Are you torn between two textbooks because they each have sections you would like your students to read? Do you want to bring current events into the classroom, but the textbooks aren't current enough? Penguin Packs are the answer!
What are Penguin Packs?
Penguin Packs are collections of printed or digital materials chosen or created by instructors for students to enhance their course curriculum.
Contents can vary from one pack to another and can vary from quarter to quarter. They may include instructor's notes, journal articles, newspaper columns, portions of books, or illustrations—you choose!
Unlike handouts, Penguin Packs
- Are not charged to the department's budget
- Have a professional appearance
- Are sold at a minimal charge
- Are available at the Bookstore
Your Department Saves Time and Money
Deans from each instructional unit on campus have found that the number of copies made for students within their departments have amounted to a substantial portion of their departments' expenses each quarter. To help reduce these expenditures, the Clark College Bookstore works with instructors to make Penguin Packs for sale at the Bookstore at no cost to the department.
Real Deal for Students
The rising costs of textbooks have students concerned about the value and usefulness of some required materials for their classes. Penguin Packs are a great value because they are used cover to cover. And unlike textbooks, there are no marketing or transportation costs built into the price. In addition, instructors can tailor the content of the Penguin Pack each quarter to meet the needs of a dynamic course curriculum. This flexibility allows Penguin Packs to be the perfect enhancement to any course.
Copyright - It's the Law
Permission must be obtained from copyright holders of materials "borrowed" from books, websites, periodicals, blogs, and other sources. See the Copyright Law Overview to see what is protected. In most cases copyright holders will also collect royalty fees for use of their work. The Clark College Bookstore will clear a limited number of permissions for your Penguin Pack.
If you have a course pack you would like to make available for students, follow these steps:
Step 1: Collect materials to be included in the Penguin Pack
Most written works and graphics which are not the instructor's or department's own work will require copyright permission. In keeping with the US Copyright Act, it is the Bookstore's policy to ensure that copyright holders receive their due compensation and that express permission must be received before the work or graphic is used in a Penguin Pack.
If you plan to include material in a course pack that may involve copyright permission, contact the Bookstore's Penguin Pack Coordinator, Laura Bush at (360) 992-2617 or LBush@clark.edu for details.
